Session I - Arab Spring
During the time that the Arab Spring took place, I personally was not involved in social media or politics. Since hearing about the dynamics in the Middle East during that time, I had since viewed the time as a strange and distant example of early digital media influence. Instead, through research in this assignment, I've seen that the Arab Spring is an event that still has a significant lasting impact on the dynamics between goverment and society in countries like Egypt.
Even to this day, there is not significant clarity in the events of the Arab Spring. Even epidemics as large as govenrment internet shutdown were left untraced and un-proveable. Effects of the movement are undeniable, but its causes and affects are still debated today.
Another important aspect of the Arab Spring was the involvement of people from all over the world. Being a primarily social movement, arguments and perspectives were broadcast wider than ever before. Other governments learned what and what not to do very quickly. Protestors could relate directly to others attempting to empathaize with their cause and heartache. It is obvious that the Arab Spring was an early and unpredictable spearhead of mobile and social communiction.
