DE Committee at ASPH

On April 4, Vera attended a meeting of the School of Public Distance Education committee and presented an overview of services available on campus through CTE, TTS and UIS to faculty who already teach distance education courses and to those who are considering teaching at a distance.

Article of interest from biology instructor, University of South Florida

To Click Or Not To Click: That’s The Questionby Johnny El-Rady, Instructor of Biology, University of South Florida

http://www.innovateonline.info/index.php?view=article&id=171 “For students, the electronic classroom voting technology enhances the

learning experience. In addition to encouraging attendance, classroom voting

systems motivate students to stay focused; in any given lecture, students

may be expected to discuss important concepts or principles with their peers

and to answer questions accordingly. Moreover, voting systems increase

students’ interest in course activities. Using the clickers is fun and

addictive, allowing students to push buttons and compare themselves to the

rest of the class. Through the use of such systems, a class becomes less

formal and the atmosphere much more student-centered. Most importantly,

voting systems promote interaction and active learning. Instead of

information merely passing from the instructor to students, students teach

and learn from each other, and teachers can use the class response to

generate further discussion. Because individual responses are posted

anonymously, the technology is also quite effective for sensitive topics,

such as those dealing with ethics.”

1. Grad school is now requiring a “capstone experience” for graduate programs. MLIS does not require a thesis or internship. They agreed to use eportfolios as their general “capstone experience” for MLIS students. Students may alternately do an internship, but would still be expected to summarize the experience in eportfolio format. School Media students are required to complete eportfolio and internship already. Donna Shannon has been working with eportfolio expert Marilyn Heath as well as with Mitchell.

2. Active discussion about whether onsites should continue to be required for DE courses. Led way to bigger picture of “are we sticking with the cohort model or not…” now that courses are online?

3. PhD program - - emphsis on teacher/scholar approach. I told them about PFF as a way for students to gain and credential teaching experience.

4. John Olsgaard did a presentation on using an electronic tablet in online class. He uses it within Breeze which limits some of the tablet’s capabilities.

5. Jill Chappell-Fail did a presentation on Blogs and Podcasting and showed examples of blogs she has worked on. I told them how we use them internally (like this) and they seemed to think that would be very useful to them instead of the listserv in some contexts.

Dr. Curtis Ford requested a Breeze account. He would like to experiment with this technology to see if he can use it for teaching Russian online. Vera suggested using Breeze Live for teaching foreign languages during the roundtable discussion at the SCSS on March 24. It looks like it may be a very useful tool for practicing and assessing aural comprehension and speaking skills.

Vera asked Mitchell West to set up an account for Curtis Ford.

CON Fac. Dev’t Forum, 3/31: effect

After the presentation at the College of Nursing on 3/31,

Vera was invited to attend two meetings, April 17 and May 9, of the curriculum redesign committee. The purpose of these meetings is to go through the nursing courses at the master’s level and id those that should be adapted for the online delivery in the near future, and to recommend an appropriate mix of technologies for each course.

Laree Schoolmeesters requested a Breeze account; she would like to develop some course materials. Vera forwarded this request to Mitchell West, TTS.

Beverly Baliko, who was unable to attend the 3/31 event, requested a consultation/meeting to discuss online teaching. She would like to develop some online materials and activities and use them in her fall 06 courses. Vera will follow up on this request.

Visit to Philosophy Department Teaching Seminar

Ruthie and I visited the philosophy department, at the request of Jerry Hacket, the chair. We attended the first half or so of a one credit-hour seminar they run for their graduate students. They have, in my view, an exemplary program. First, all graduate students are mentored by faculty in their experience as TAs during their first and (I think) second years. Then, they go solo and teach one or more of four coruses — Intro to Philosophy, Deductive Logic, Inductive Logic and an ethics course. Those who teach these courses attend the seminar we visited today. The seminar is loosely guided by the text Thinking about Teaching and Learning (Leamnson), which, except for the first two chapters apparently, is a sound book. They also do video observations and watch them as a grooup.

As for what we might offer them, Ruth explained the Preparing Future Faculty Program, which they showed an interest in. Essentially, the program would formally recognize what they already accomplish with their departmental program. I suggested that they also look into using an ePortfolio to track their activities and accomplishments.

The students also mentioned that they would be interested in a peer society for the purpose of collaboration across disciplines. The visit made me consider a panel discussion for graduate students in the fall to sort of kick off a peer society. (Ruthie)

March 14-28: Vera worked with Steve Ehrmann of the TLT group to determine the terms and conditions for a Flashlight Online account for Jean Carrano from USC Sumter. Currently, USC Sumter does not participate in the Flashlight program at USC. An excerpt from Steve Ehrmann’s email:

“The TLT Group authorizes you to create a 3 month demonstration user account for Jean Carrano for the purposes of evaluating Flashlight Online for potential use by USC Sumter. The TLT Group also invites Dr. Carrano to take part in subscriber-only webinars and webcasts about Flashlight Online and Flashlight Online 2.0.”

Vera opened the account and emailed Jean Carrano the account information, including TLT’s terms and conditions. Vera advised Jean to inform the administration at USC-Sumter about her interest in this instrument and ask them to consider participating in the Flashlight Online program for 2006-2007.
