Quick Information

  1. Figura TG is a browser of the Charrette database. Its main purpose is to provide quick access to the images and critical edition of the Charrette poem, as well as to the grammatical and rhetorical mark-up associated with the critical edition. It is also designed to allow the user to exploit the transitive relations that exist in the database so that the user may move freely from manuscript page image to text line to figure and vice versa. One caveat: that this tool is not an analytical tool in the proper sense of the term. It does not present statistical data for such things as the number of figures per line, or the number of figures that contain figures of a certain genus, or the number of figures of a certain genus that contain words of a certain part of speech. Such queries are both complex and computationally expensive and so must be generated in a customized fashion off-line and then published. It is certainly a goal of this project to publish these, and some are forth-coming, but it is important to keep in mind the purpose of this particular tool to get the most use out of it.
  2. Four points of entry. Figura TG provides four points of entry in the Charrette database: Pages, Figures, Words and Text. The "Pages" entree provides access to the manuscript pages; "Figures" leads to the catalog of rhetorical figures; "Words" leads to an index of words in the text organized by their "dictionary form," or "dform"; and "Text" leads to the text itself in 50 line intervals. Each point of entree produces a list of results with links that allow the user to drill down in different directions, depending upon context.
  3. You are encouraged to click freely to learn what is available on each page. In violation of good usabilty theory, no links are underlined, but most are blue, with the exception of the words in the text, which are black.
  4. Controllable targets. Look at the status bar at the bottom: you can switch the targets of any given frame -- e.g. the menu, the left frame and the right frame. The defalt arrangement is for each frame to load in the opposite frame, so that for any given result you always have the source query in front of you. This is particularly useful for long lists of results. The exceptions to controllable targeting are paging menus. For example, when browsing the text, you may page through the text in the same frame by selecting the "PREV" and "NEXT" links.
